A guide is listed below to inform you of when your child is eligible to attend 3 year old and/or 4 year old kindergarten.  In Victoria your child must be 3 or 4 years of age by 30 April in the year they attend the corresponding 3 or 4 year old kindergarten.

The State Government provides funding to support children to access a kindergarten program in the two years before they start school. The funding is a contribution towards meeting the cost of the kindergarten program. Your child can attend only one funded kindergarten program in a single year.

If your child has already attended a funded kindergarten program you must bring this to our attention. Repeating 4 year old kindergarten without funding approval is not available as per DE guidelines.

If you are considering delaying your child's school entry consider carefully the kindergarten start year also.  Children are not eligible to apply for a repeat 3 year old kindergarten year nor are allowed to have a self-funded repeat year as per DE guidelines

A child cannot commence 3 year old kindergarten prior to turning 3 years of age due to the Education and Care Services National Regulations in regards to child:staff ratios and room requirements for under 3's.

You will be contacted by the kindergarten some time between mid-July and September of that year regarding your child's position. No guarantee is given to families when applying for kindergarten preferences.
